In late June, MrBeast’s ViewStats analytics app rolled out an AI thumbnail generator that could swap faces and mimic any creator’s style. The promise? “Viral thumbnails in seconds.” The reality? A firestorm.
What Went Down
Creators blasted the tool for making copy-cat art too easy. Gaming star PointCrow called it “fundamentally hurtful” to artists. Others balked at the steep price tag. Within five days, headlines from PC Gamer to Insider shouted that the feature was dead on arrival.
MrBeast listened. He killed the AI, apologized, and added a hire-a-human thumbnail marketplace inside the app—trying to “turn a negative into a positive”. Good move, but the whiplash showed how even YouTube’s biggest star can stumble when running a software app.
